A couple has found a message from the past in their home, 23 years after it was sent to them.

Before we get into it, no, this isn't one of those time-traveller stories. You know, when people claim to have come from hundreds of years into the future, brandishing a phone that looks suspiciously 21st century in origin and some grainy footage purporting to be, say, the city of Las Vegas.

Fun as those stories are, this one is - well - true.

Alex and Jess Monney, who live in San Jose, California, were refurbishing their bathroom to freshen it up after it had been the same way for a long while - 23 years, to be precise.

They know this because they stripped the walls back to the plasterboard and found a message from the previous occupants of the house from 1995.

It read: "Hi! We're the Shinsekis! We remodelled this bathroom [in] Summer 1995. If you're reading this, that means you're remodelling the bathroom again. What's wrong with the way we did it?!?!?"

There was also a note from the previous couple's pet - a rabbit called Cassie.

That note read: "Hi! I'm Cassie the bunny rabbit. I lived here too! (I'm potty trained)."

Not sure why they felt that future generations would wish to know that information, but whatever.

Mr Monney tweeted out the picture and it's since gone viral - on Reddit, it's been upvoted around 80,000 times. Pretty impressive numbers.

This set everyone to thinking about what they've found in their house after years and years.

One guy in Indiana discovered a load of porn mags in a wall cavity, for instance:

We can only hope he shifted them with gloves.

Another person found a beer can built into the walls of their bathroom - It turned out that her dad was providing the builders with cans while they were doing the work. What a nice dude:

The only things I've found in my house from the previous occupants are dog hairs and half-arsed building work.

Cheers, guys.
