Doctor Warns Against Getting A Cold Shower Before Bed To Try And Help You Cool Down

A doctor has recommended against a cold shower to try and cool during the heatwave.

It's been a bit rough trying to get a decent night's kip the past few days due to the heat, and if you've been struggling then you might be tempted to just jump in a freezing cold shower.

Doctor Sarah Jarvis has advised against this, urging people to opt for a cool shower rather than a cold one.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain where she offered her professional opinion on viewers' tips, she said: "We don't necessarily want to have a really cold shower.

"If you have a cool shower and then allow the water to evaporate off your skin, so you don't open the doors to the shower and just stand there as the water evaporates, that will definitely help cool you down."

She also warned against putting ice directly onto the skin as it can cause ice burns - not ideal.

Dr Jarvis said: "Please don't forget, never put ice directly onto your skin because that can cause ice burns.

"But a cool flannel around your neck, and possibly putting sheets in the freezer, but again, not risking any ice burns, can also help."

Earlier this year, sleep expert James Wilson - who calls himself The Sleep Geek - told LADbible some of his top tips for sleeping during the heatwave.

He said: "During the day, open windows on either side of the house. Get a nice airflow through and when direct sunlight is in a room, ensure the blinds or curtains are closed.

"Have a bath or shower in the hour before bed, or a great tip is to fill a hot water bottle with lukewarm water and place your bare feet on it. This will raise your temperature slightly and then it will drop, helping your body prepare for sleep."

Storyblocks

But he went on to say it's our mindsets that can actually be our biggest obstacle to a good night's sleep - adding: "I find the biggest issue many of us run into in the hot weather is our mindset.

"We convince ourselves that it is just too hot and that we won't sleep tonight. This then leads onto how awful it will be tomorrow if we don't sleep tonight and before you know it, you have caused your heart rate to rise and you have talked yourself into sleeping poorly.

"My advice is not to worry too much about it. We live in the UK, at some point the weather will break and it will cool down again. Until then just try and get the best sleep you can."

Sweet dreams.
