We all know that one person who hammers energy drinks so bad we wonder how they've still got any teeth. Regardless of the time, they always rock up with a can of fizz in hand.

Well, now might be the time to step in and tell those people to calm the fuck down because experts have warned that you could be five times more likely to suffer a stroke if you guzzle on energy drinks.

According to The Sun, the warning also tells regular consumers that their addiction to energy drinks is fuelling a rise in diagnoses of irregular heartbeats.

It is reported that just one energy drink could be enough to trigger arrhythmia which is an abnormal heart rhythm. Scary shit.

Frightening research from the University of Texas found that one energy drink is enough to cause heart problems as they narrow your blood vessels. Nice.

Researchers looked at 44 students from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, with all participants in their 20s and classed as 'healthy' non-smokers.

They tested the function of endothelium, the layer of cells lining the surface of blood vessels - the dysfunction of which has been shown to be an indicator of heart attacks as arteries aren't able to fully dilate.

Participants' endothelial function was tested before each of them drank a 24-ounce energy drink, before being tested again 90 minutes later. Within that time, the internal diameter of blood vessels had, on average, been decreased by nearly half.

Scientists led by Dr John Higgins at the University of Texas in Houston told The Sun: "As energy drinks are becoming more and more popular, it is important to study the effects of these drinks on those who frequently drink them and better determine what, if any, is a safe consumption pattern."

Trudie Lobban, founder and chief executive of The Arrhythmia Alliance, told the Mail: "You wouldn't necessarily have to have a faulty heart to suffer from arrhythmia - stimulants containing caffeine can trigger it.

"Six or seven coffees a day could do it, but these energy drinks carry a really high risk."

Study found that consuming just one energy drink could increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in 90 minutes.

Now children's health campaigners are urging the UK government to increase its proposed ban on the sale of energy drinks, so that it affects those up to the age of 18 instead of 16.

According to an online survey by the CFC, which is supported by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, 97 percent of teachers supported introducing a ban to children and young people purchasing energy drinks.
