Royal Wedding 2018: Why Have Prince Harry's Exes Been Invited?

There's a reason both of Prince Harry's ex-girlfriends were present at his marriage to Meghan Markle today

Depending on what your views are on the royal wedding, you may have been paying enough attention to notice that not one, but two of Prince Harry's ex-girlfriends were at today's event.

Having the ghosts of Harry's relationship past rock up to the wedding is something you might've thought the happy couple would've worked hard to avoid.

Especially since there were some notable omissions - including the Obamas might we add, who were widely assumed to have secured a spot.

However, exes Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas - both of whom Harry is on good terms with - could be seen smiling at the chapel on their way to the exclusive event today.

While this might seem odd, the Mirror reports that inviting the exes is in fact a courtesy for the royal relatives and the same was carried out by Prince William during his wedding to Kate Middleton back in 2011.

On the list was Wills' teenage fling Jecca Craig, his pre-Kate other half Olivia Hunt, and pre-pre-Kate girlfriend Rose Farguhar. Oh yeah, and Isabelle Calthorpe, who the elder Windsor brother apparently had a huge crush on. Awkward!

While you might feel for poor Kate having to face so many ghosts from Will's past, her exes were in full force too, including lawyer Rupert Finch and journalist Willem Marx. So perhaps the ex list balanced itself out.

This tradition goes far back across the generations, too. In 1981, Camilla Parker-Bowles was invited to Prince Charles' wedding to Princess Di (RIP), while his ex Lady Sarah Spencer (Di's sister - double awkward) also got an invite.

In addition to politeness, another reason why Will and Hazza had so many exes at their weddings is simply that they've all remained good friends.

What's more, because William and Harry aren't the current heirs to the throne, their weddings are known as semi-state occasions and therefore it's far easier to get people on the guest list, so to speak. Exes, celebs, and whoever's going to make the day a damn sight more interesting.

So while most people cringe at the thought of inviting their little black book of exes to their big day, for the royals it's no biggie. They're just totally laid-back about the whole thing.
