For many of us, booze consumption has been a coping mechanism in a year of lockdown and tiered distancing regulations, and you'll no doubt be familiar with the resultant bad head. But here's a useful tip for you - experts say the hangovers that follow a night drinking Prosecco are officially the worst.

This may not be news to anyone who's ever had a 'Seccy hangover - because they truly are hell on earth. But there is some actual, real life science behind that familiar pounding head.

Speaking to Tyla, sommelier and Club Vino founder Marco Castelanelli said: "If you find that you get the worst headache ever after a glass or two of Prosecco, then quite simply, blame it on the bubbles."

So basically, when you've been trying to feel a bit fancy to escape lockdown boredom, those fizzy bevvies are behind these universally horrific hangovers.

A familiar sight.

He added: "Prosecco and Champagne both contain little pockets of carbon dioxide which change how the alcohol flows through the bloodstream, helping the body to adsorb the alcohol faster."

And if you've noticed that those bubbles go down an absolute treat, it's not just the fact that you're downing it that causes you to get drunk.

He continued: "Once in the bloodstream, the Co2 competes with oxygen - which is why you might feel a little woozy and rather drunk rather quickly, leading to an exaggerated hangover in the form of a pounding head."

The best way to prevent a hangover is either not to drink at all, or to get involved with a bit of damage limitation and make sure you do all the sensible things you already know.

Drinking a glass of water between each alcoholic drink is said to help, ditto drinking the fizzy stuff slowly. And, of course, you should avoid drinking on an empty stomach. But what's Marco's tip for those of us liable to forget all these handy tips?

"Drink a large glass of water before bed," he says. Well, that sounds easy enough.

We've all been there.

We all have our own techniques for dealing with a hangover, whether it's having a cry in the shower or having a sneaky curer, hair of the dog style - but there could be a new saviour that is supported by actual SCIENCE.

Researchers in Finland believe they have created a pill to get rid of those morning-after symptoms and it comes in the form of a tablet.

Having carried out a study on men who had been drinking, an amino acid table called L-cysteine was found to reduce all those symptoms that are so difficult to shake after a night on the bevvies.

The tablet was tested on a group of men who had to drink alcohol for several hours, on six occasions.

Results showed that the men who had taken the pill said that they felt less hungover, compared with men who were given a placebo pill.

The packs are sold online from various outlets, but can be bought for less than 13p each if you get this pack of 100.
