All news anchors are prone to slip-ups, and the ABC's Bev O'Connor is no exception, after she accidentally referred to the Victorian Premier as 'Dan Murphy'.

Proving that politicians have to be ready for news to break at the drop of a hat, Andrews called a press conference at 10.30pm last night (3 February).

The leader informed the state that restrictions would be brought back into Melbourne after a man working in hotel quarantine tested positive for coronavirus.

Before that presser started, the ABC informed its viewers it would soon cut to Andrews - but O'Connor accidentally slipped in the name of the liquor supermarket chain, saying: "We'll be crossing to a press conference with Dan Murphy - uh, Dan Andrews, soon."

The hilarious Freudian slip was picked up by media organisations across Australia and everyone had a good chuckle.

Bev wrote on the social media site: "Not on the beers tonight I promise, not Dan Murphy but Dan Andrews now on."

The awkward moment even caused 'Dan Murphy' to trend worldwide on Twitter. After noticing her small mistake was causing hundreds of hilarious tweets, she asked whether she'll 'ever live this down'.

People were quick to support the ABC host during her time of cringe.

One person wrote: "Both Dan's have served us very well through this pandemic. You will be forgiven by all."

Another added: "A 10.30 presser was stress-inducing for so many of us, Bev, so it was needed light relief!"

A third said: "That's OK Bev. As one of the objective newsbringers you are allowed to make mistakes, especially humorous ones. Great to see you're light hearted enough to go with the flow and be a bit light hearted about it."

It's not the first time Dan Murphy's has been brought into the news cycle for a strange reason.

Australian Nobel laureate Professor Peter Doherty accidentally posted a tweet that simply read 'Dan Murphy opening hours'.

Peter Doherty Institute

The Melbourne immunologist won the coveted Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1996 and followed it up with Australian of the Year in 1997. He's been honoured for his work on how the human body combats viruses - which couldn't be more relevant than now.

But it seems like Professor Doherty is as prone to simple human error as everyone else.

He's since admitted that his wires got crossed after looking at his screen for too long. What we respect though is that he left it up for everyone to admire.

After noticing the awkward tweet, Professor Doherty followed up with another post.

He said: "Not sure what this means but, since inadvertently tweeting about Dan Murphy at lunchtime, I seemed to have picked up 1,100 followers."

Hey, if people got a giggle from the original post and will now get updates from a world leading immunologist, that can only be a good thing.
