An amateur wrestler could need to have one of his legs amputated after a horror injury in the ring saw both his knees snap backwards.

Justin from Delaware, US was performing a wrestling move that involved jumping from the top rope when the stunt went wrong.

Local media say the wrestling match hadn't even begun when Justin suffered the awful leg break. It's believed he was in the middle of his entrance into the ring when he leapt from the rope and landed awkwardly.

A video posted to social media shows him making his way into the makeshift ring, before he climbs onto the ropes and jumps backwards.

If you're squeamish, look away now - this one isn't for the faint-hearted.

Just as he landed on the canvas deck, the immense pressure on his knees saw his legs snap underneath him and he collapsed in a heap.

The father-of-one and part-time amateur wrestler was rushed to hospital with doctors later having to establish whether one of his legs would need amputating.

Justin doesn't have health insurance and now faces medical bills of roughly US$200,000. His sister, Ashley, set up a GoFundMe page in a bid to help cover some of the hefty costs.

She wrote: "Justin jumped and spun from the second rope of the ring and when his feet hit the base of the structure, his knees bent backwards and both of his legs snapped!

"Since his injuries, Justin has had three surgeries with rods and pins put in his left leg with an additional surgery scheduled this week. Physicians are working hard to determine if amputation will be necessary.

"He'll ultimately be faced with a long road to recovery starting with a two week minimum hospital stay.

"Yes $200,000 seems incredibly steep, however the hospital stay, numerous surgeries, medical equipment, the countless months of physical therapy ahead, and even handicapping his home will far exceed this request.

"Though the internet has been a mixed bag of concern and distasteful cruelty, Justin has remained lighthearted in his situation. However, no amount of money will cover the emotional damage he will continue to endure through the aftermath of this horrible accident, so any offerings would help."

Ashley says Justin has 'been through so much physically' in the last few days, on top of battling the grief of losing his dad last year, while he is also going through a custody battle.

Since being posted, the GoFundMe has received more than US$19,000 in donations.
