Ash Barty Becomes First Australian Woman To Make Wimbledon Final In 41 Years

Ash Barty has booked herself a spot in the Wimbledon final after downing Angelique Kerber in the semis.

The tennis star has become the first Australian to make it to the end in 41 years.

She dug deep during her match with Wimbledon's 2018 winner and eventually came out on top 6-3, 7-6 (7/3).

Barty was overcome with emotion when a Kerber error ultimately gave her the win and says it's an amazing feeling to be a part of history.

"This is incredible, this is close to as good a tennis match as I will ever play," she said.

"Angie brought the best out of me today and it was a hell of a match right from the first ball and I knew I would have to play that well just to compete."

Ash also paid tribute to the history books as she wore a dress that was incredibly similar to the one worn by Evonne Goolagong Cawley when she won her first Wimbledon title in 1971.

The 25-year-old has become a national sporting treasure after winning the French Open in 2019 and was the first Aussie to make the final at SW19.

Barty paid tribute to her team and he own tenacity for helping her reach an incredible milestone in her career.

"I've had an incredible journey. I wouldn't change one moment. It's been unique, it's been incredible, it's been tough. Being able to play on the final Saturday here at Wimbledon is just going to be the best experience ever," she said.

"Very proud of myself and my team and now we get a chance to win the childhood dream."

She will now take on eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the final. The two have an intense history, with Barty beating the Czech player five times and losing to her twice.

Pliskova earned her spot in the final during a nail-biting semi-final match against world number two Aryna Sabalenka 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

It will be hard to top that performance, with Pliskova saying she played some of her best tennis get that win.

"It was an amazing match from both of us, I got a bit frustrated but she was serving unbelievably - she was in a semi-final so had to play some great tennis," Pliskova said.

This is Plisvoka's second grand slam final after reaching the end of the US Open in 2016.
