Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger suffered a global blackout and it took nearly eight hours before the problem was fixed.
While the issue has been blamed on 'networking issues' there is a group of people who think they really know what happened.
Astrologists are pretty certain the huge social media outage was cause by Mercury being in retrograde.

A quick scan of Twitter (one of the few social media sites not affected by the blackout) showed there are plenty of people pointing their crystals at the cosmological event as a reason.
Mercury being in retrograde is when the planet performs an optical illusion that makes it appear like it's moving backwards from our perspective.

Astrologists believe this event can affect technology and communication systems.
This year's one is particularly bad because the Mercury retrograde is in Libra.
Lisa Stardust, astrologer and creator of The Astrology Deck told Cosmopolitan: "Everyone knows that when Mercury is retrograde, communication and technology get wonky.
"But let's look at Instagram's chart: The Sun was in Libra, Mercury was in Libra, and Saturn was in Libra.

"Mercury Retrograde is in Libra, Libra is ruled by Venus, and Venus rules over creators and money. There's nothing more direct than Mercury Retrograde in Libra and people complaining that they can't make money through creating."
She explains that because Instagram was created on October 6, it means the social networking site is a Libran and therefore apparently more susceptible to Mercury's movements.
Lisa recommended people to chill out on social media at least until Mercury retrograde ends on October 18.
