Aussie Company Is Selling The World’s First Banana Spiced Rum

What a combination.

Rum is a beloved alcoholic spirit in Australia that is drunk by millions of people across the country.

Bananas are also the most popular fruit sold Down Under, with the average Aussie buying nearly 20 kilograms of the delicious treat each year.

While these two things are pretty much always consumed separately, one Aussie company was genius enough to bring them together.

The Small Batch Spirits Company came up with world's first banana spiced rum: CARGO CULT Banana Spiced Rum.

They've paired North Queensland bananas with their South Pacific Spiced Rum and it's bloody delicious.

A statement in a press released revealed: "We hadn't considered bananas and our Spiced Rum in the same sentence (or bottle) until our London-based Brand Ambassador told us how good they taste together.

"He told us of several high-end London Bars using our Spiced Rum and bananas in their best-selling cocktails. He asked us if we could possibly put bananas in our next batch of Spiced Rum."

But it wasn't just 'throw bananas into rum and Bob's your uncle'.

The crew at The Small Batch Spirits Company said there was a hell of a lot of trial and error that went into perfecting the taste.

They wanted to make sure the banana wasn't too overpowering but definitely still evident in every sip.

The tricky part was overcoming the banana's natural aging process and the fact that it emits a gas called ethylene.

This process can change the way the banana tastes, so they had to work out how to get the absolute sweet spot for when the fruit is perfectly ripe.

"We draw aged rum from PNG and Fiji distilleries, then blend, spice and bottle in Australia using six natural spices before infusing real bananas (imparting sweetness and taste) and natural extract from bananas (complementing aroma)," the company said.

"The result is a balanced and aromatic nose and taste, with banana leading the medley of spices, but not overpowering them. The infusion of ripe bananas brings sweetness but still finishes dry and lingers on the palette."

They say the rum goes really well with Daiquiris, Old Fashioneds, and even Espresso Martinis.

But, if you can't be bothered with all that faff, then the rum goes down brilliantly with some fresh fruit juice.

It's on sale now at Dan Murphy's for 20 per cent off so get a few and slosh it down over summer.
