Beachgoers off the coast of Queensland came across a shocking find over the weekend.

They discovered 10 one kilogram packages of white powder, believed to be cocaine, at Ramsay Bay on Hinchinbrook Island during high tide.

Strangely enough, the find came as a major search for a crocodile was underway in the area at the time.

Authorities are conducting an investigation around the area in regards to the powder and they have urged people to come forward if they make a similar discovery.

Police have warned the substance 'could become a health risk' if not handled properly.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Graham Camp warned anyone who finds additional packages should not open them and instead contact police

"Anyone who was at sea or on the coastline near these locations and saw anything suspicious in the water or other suspicious activity is urged to contact police," he said.

He added that more of the substance may wash up due to tidal flows and ocean currents.

"The substance could be hazardous," he added.

While police are set to conduct a forensic examination of the powder, they suspected it is cocaine.

Officers are expected to provide more details to the public about the incident when they address the media today.
