Bunnings Warehouse is under pressure to change its rules on allowing dogs to enter after a tragic incident in Queensland.

An unrestrained pit bull reportedly mauled a small dog sitting in a trolley to death in front of horrified onlookers.

The DIY store has reached out to the owner to offer support, however people on social media are calling for the company to crack down on dogs.

As it stands, dogs are allowed into Bunnings stores across the country, but they have to be either carried, secured in a trolley or on a lead with a muzzle.

Several Australian news organisations asked their readers for their thoughts, with 3,400 Courier Mail users believing the rules should change.

One person said: "Only guide and assistance dogs should be allowed into any shop, retail store or shopping centre anywhere. All other dogs should be left at home period.

Another supporter added: "Unless they are a help dog they should not be allowed in any store or market. Regardless of what the owner might say, sometimes things happen that upset the dog."

A third wrote: "Why the bloody hell do people have to take their dogs with them everywhere they go. Surely they can go to the hardware (store) and leave it at home."

There were at least 2,400 people who thought the rules should stay the same and feel one tragic incident shouldn't affect everyone.

The owner of the dog that died allegedly told the pit bull owner to keep watch of their pet just before the tragic attack happened.

The animal victim was rush to a nearby hospital, however, despite veterinarians' best efforts, they couldn't save the dog.

Brisbane City Council has launched an investigation into the incident and will be looking at ways to prevent this from happening again.

A spokesperson has released a statement, saying: "Council's Rapid Response Group attended the store on Sunday and has subsequently launched an investigation.

"Initial investigations suggest an unrestrained dog has attacked and killed a dog that was sitting in a trolley.

"We are taking this incident very seriously and will work with the store throughout the investigation.

"Pet owners must show responsibility, and we expect all owners to ensure their animal is under effective control at all times when in public and at home."
