Canberra Is On Track To Become The Most Covid-19 Vaccinated City In The World

The political heartland of Australia could soon have a very good claim to fame.

Canberra will soon have claim to fame that might not be matched anywhere in the world.

The political heartland of Australia could soon be able to brag about having the highest Covid-19 vaccination rate on the planet.

It's a fairly bold title considering how late Australia was to the vaccination game and how bungled the rollout was from the federal government.

However, it's very clear that once the vaccines arrived in the Australian Capital Territory, Canberrans raced to get them as quickly as possible.

While Canberra has largely avoided the heavy lockdowns and restrictions like their New South Wales and Victorian neighbours, the city was confronted with an outbreak in August.

This only pushed residents to book up as many slots as possible and they're on track to have nearly the entire city's population vaccinated by next month.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr told reporters: "The current evidence suggests that the ACT will be one of the most vaccinated cities in the world.

"We expect to be at around 99 per cent of the eligible population fully vaccinated by the end of November.

"It's a testament to ACT residents and their willingness to protect themselves, their family and their community.

"What has been hugely beneficial to the ACT is the efficient vaccination rollout.

"Our mass vaccination hubs have provided the majority of Canberrans with a very easy and simply way to get the vaccine. The nurses and staff at our vaccination centres are running the most efficient vaccination programs in the country, with close to 100 per cent utilisation rates."

Over the weekend, Chief Minister Barr revealed a whopping 97 per cent of Canberrans had already received their first dose.

That means the city should get as close as it possibly can to being fully vaxxed if everyone follows up with their second jab.

He said during a press conference: "Over the coming three weeks, the bulk of the territory's vaccination program will be second doses.

"There are around 40,000 bookings for second doses in ACT government clinics alone in the coming weeks."

The United Arab Emirates is currently the most vaccinate country in the world, according to the New York Times, with 86 per cent of citizens having received both jabs.

The Middle Eastern country is followed by Portugal (85 per cent), Malta (84 per cent), Singapore (81 per cent) and Spain (78 per cent).
