Pharmacies across Australia are now allowed to sell low-dose cannabidiol (CBD).

Previous to February 1, people were required to get a prescription, referral or special approval to get access to the ingredient from the cannabis plant.

But before you rush to the shops to get high, CBD might be one of the main active chemicals from weed, however it doesn't get you high like THC does.

CBD is becoming more widely recognised for having medical benefits and can be used to ease chronic conditions such as arthritis and to offer respite to people suffering from anxiety.

Cannabis Doctors Australia says the chemical has also shown promising signs at combating things like PTSD and insomnia.

You'll now be able buy an over-the-counter maximum daily dose of 150mg without prior approval.

The human body naturally produces cannabinoids to keep the body in balance. Many people aren't able to create enough of these, however, which causes imbalance. That's where the CBD oil comes in.

Chief Scientific Officer for Eos Scientific Dr David Dawit told The Mirror: "CBD is regarded as a food supplement that helps to bring balance to our bodies and minds by complementing or 'topping up' the endocannabinoid system which most are unable to create enough of therefore causing imbalance.

"The human body naturally creates cannabinoids, which are used by the endocannabinoid system to maintain balance/homeostasis within the body.

"The endocannabinoid system has been long regarded as the most important system in the body for maintaining long term health."
