Nunuk Nuraini, the creator of the iconic Indomie mi goreng instant noodles, has died.

Indonesian media confirmed her death in a statement late last week, however no cause of death was revealed.

Nunuk's company produced a type of instant noodles that became enormously popular around the world.

The simple combination of sauces, seasoning and dried onion on top of noodles in a boiling hot broth was not only delicious, but fantastically cheap.

It would be hard to walk through a university campus in Australia without hearing one student talk about how they're going to have to chow down on mi goreng for the next few nights after paying for their new textbooks.

You can get a packet of five instant noodle packs for less than $3 in Australia, with singular packs only costing around 65 cents.

They remain the perfect meal to whack into your gob when you're a little short on change.

People on social media flocked to pay tribute to the legend that helped keep struggling university students, among many others, fed during tough times.

One person wrote: "Nunuk Nuraini is the true icon in my life, my fave chef & food scientist. She perfected the Indomie Mi Goreng spice mix, a harbinger of comfort in times of anxiety. Mi Goreng is ubiquitous, reliable, & affordable. Glorious on its own, better with egg, & best eaten with friends."

Another added: "My enabler of quick meals during my younger days... uhmm, even now during the lockdown!"

A third said: "The #Indomie mi goreng has touched the lives of many, needless to say it is a favourite among Malaysians alike. Our gratitude goes out to #NunukNuraini, the inventor behind the brand. Sadly, Nunuk passed away on Wednesday, January 27 at the age of 59 in Indonesia."
