Five men have each copped $5,000 fines after being caught outside in public despite being Covid-19 positive.

The men, aged between 23 to 32, were spotted in Leppington in Sydney's southwest sitting around a small table.

When NSW Police officers spoke to the blokes, who were also not wearing face masks, they revealed they had tested positive for the virus while in regional NSW.

They were told to go home immediately after their results came back, however they were caught hanging out at a home.

The fellas were allegedly playing cards on a footpath and weren't happy when they were told they were being punished.

Footage captured by 7News reveals one of the men yelled at police: "You pieces of s***. Give us another fine and I'll see you in court. I'll f****** see you in court.

"We're not doing nothing wrong, go f*** yourself, that's it. What the f*** is wrong with you bro, get your story straight and come back."

They were each given fines of $5,000 for breaching the public health orders and were escorted back to their homes to do their mandatory isolation.

The owner of the home where the men were caught playing cards alleged they were perfectly fine to be sitting there.

Samih Dawoud told 7News: "It's my property, it says everywhere you're allowed to be on your property."

However, NSW Police don't have that view.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon has explained that if you are required to isolate then you must do so at your own residence and not come outside.

"The people are required to remain within their premises, remain within their house obviously so that the virus can't be spread further," he said.

"It's very clear that what these gentlemen did was inconsistent with that self-isolation order."

Where the men were caught falls into one of NSW's 12 local government areas of concern, which is subjected to harsher lockdown restrictions compared to the rest of the state.
