A gaming grandma has posted a heartfelt video announcing she will be taking a break from streaming due to hurtful online comments.

'Skyrim Grandma', whose real name is Shirley Curry, revealed that her health had taken a downward spiral because of stress and anxiety.

The 84-year-old explained that she's constantly upset and hurt by some of the comments left by her followers.

Naturally, you're probably thinking that people are slinging out virtual verbal abuse left, right and centre like they would to a teenager on Call of Duty.

But according to Shirley, the comments usually come in the form of overbearing attempts to help her, with gamers telling her she should be doing a certain quest, or play the game a certain way or even suggesting she should play other games.

She told her followers: "My blood pressure is going insane. My stress level is way too high. And I'm going to have to take control of it. Some of the comments are stressing me out way too much.

"I know I shouldn't let these things stress me out, but they do. From now on I will respond to very, very few comments. I will be deleting a lot of comments.

"I don't have to be reminded and told all the time [which games to play]. I look at all the games, I'm a gamer, if I wanted to play them I would be playing them".

"I don't have to explain myself. If you want to do those things go on and play your game, and let me play my game, and if you don't like that go watch somebody else play their game."

Shirley says she loves being by herself in the game and roleplaying with her character. She isn't interested in completing things that other games reckon are essential if you're playing Skyrim.

The elderly streamer has close to 900,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, but she's complained that each video only gets a few thousand views. Considering her videos are around 30 minutes and she puts in a decent bit of effort getting them uploaded, she's wondering whether it's worth it.

She insists that she doesn't want to make money off the hobby but she also doesn't want to continue doing it if few people are watching.

Hopefully her health improves and she comes back to show us what she loves to do.
