Outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel was trying to sure up some last minute votes for her party before citizens in the country took to the polls for their national election.

In a bid to seem like she could appeal to both humans and animals, she went to Marlow Bird Park and held some Australian lorikeets in her hands.

They flocked to her to feed and took up residency on her hands, shoulders and even her head.

However at one point, the feeding became too much as one of the birds bit her quite severely, leading the Chancellor to scream out in pain.

The photos have gone viral on social media and her reaction has sadly turned into a massive meme.

Angela Merkel isn't seeking a fifth term as leader of Germany and was visiting Marlow to promote the center-right Union bloc's candidate.

This candidate will hopefully be taking over the constituency she has held since 1990. While Ms Merkel is saying goodbye to the Chancellorship, she could be in the roll for months to come.

The ABC reports now that the voting has closed, the major parties are neck-and-neck.

She could have to remain as caretaker leader until a coalition government is formed. Only then will she be able to step own from the roll she's held for 16 years.

Exit polls suggest the Chancellor's conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), suffered its word federal election result ever with less than 25 per cent of the vote.

The Social Democrats (SPD) have pushed their nose in front with 26 per cent of the vote, however counting is still underway.

The far-right anti-immigration party Alternative For Germany (AfD) attracted 11 per cent of the vote, however other parties have refused to work with them.
