Joe Biden has been caught on a hot mic calling a reporter a nasty name.

The US President was asked a range of questions at his press conference today (January 24), however it was a query from Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy that clearly irked him.

In a video posted on The Recount's Twitter page, several journalists could be heard yelling out questions to President Biden.

You can hear amongst the chorus Doocy asking: "Do you think inflation is a political liability ahead of the midterms?"

The journalists were being told there were no more questions allowed and Biden responded to Doocy quietly, but it was picked up by the microphone sitting in front of him.

"It's a great asset - more inflation," the President said. "What a stupid son of a b***h."

Doocy was unaware of Biden's savage put down until after the press conference had finished.

He recalled on Fox News: "I couldn't even hear him because people were shouting at us to get out, but somebody came up to me in the briefing room a few minutes later and said 'Did you hear what the president said?'

"And I said, 'No, what?' And they said, 'He called you a stupid SOB.' And I said, 'Did he say SOB?' And the person said 'no'".

He later told the network's Special Report programme that he found it pretty ironic that President Biden didn't want to respond to his question.

"He didn't want to take any questions off-topic. He was at an event about inflation, and so I asked one on inflation," he explained to the show's host Bret Baier.

However, Joe Biden's response to another journalist's question at the same press conference showed he was fed up with the media.

When the reporter asked about his call with Europe over the escalating situation between Russia and Ukraine he said he was annoyed that they weren't staying on the topic of the US economy.

President Biden said: "The only reason I don't like doing this is you never report on why I called the meeting. And this is really important. I had a very, very, very good meeting. Total unanimity with all the European leaders. We will talk about it later."
