New Zealand Politician Isn't Surprised Over Meghan Markle's Racism Claim

The world was shocked when Meghan Markle alleged there were discussions about how dark Archie's skin colour would be before he was born.

The claim was aired when the Duchess of Sussex sat down with Oprah, with Meghan refusing to reveal which senior Royal brought up the 'shocking' conversation with Prince Harry.

While the allegation set social media on fire, there was one person who wasn't surprised in the slightest.

New Zealand politician Debbie Ngarewa-Packer was asked for her thoughts on the matter and she didn't hold back.

The Māori Party co-leader said: "Well it is the Crown. I don't know why everyone is so surprised that the Crown is racist."

The reaction isn't surprising considering the MP has been an open critic of the Monarchy and she has previously called on the Crown to apologise for the treatment colonisers wreaked on Māori people.

She used her maiden speech in parliament last year to explain how the traditional owners of New Zealand fared when colonisers showed up.

"I stand here as a descendant of a people who survived a holocaust, a genocide sponsored by this House and members of Parliament whose portraits still hang from the walls."

"Members of this parliament sought our extermination and created legislation to achieve it. They confiscated all our whenua, imprisoned us without trial, raped and murdered our women and children and deliberately engineered our displacement for generations to come.

"I am the third generation born since those monsters on these walls inflicted muru raupatu on Taranaki."

Buckingham Palace has responded to the Oprah interview and specifically mentioned its shock at the claims of racism.

In a rare statement, the Crown said it will look into the allegations aired during the two hour tell-all and ensured Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will always be a part of their family.

"The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan," the statement read.

"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members."
