It's that amazing time of year again where all the true blue blokes and sheilas across the nation gather together to celebrate the iconic Australian hairstyle that's business up the front and party at the back.

Mulletfest 2021 was held at Kurri Kurri, in NSW's Hunter region, and saw eager mullet-wearing Aussies flock to the Chelmsford Hotel to battle it out for the prized title of 'Mullet of the Day'.

Josh Hogg - aka the self-dubbed 'Mediocre Mullet Man' - took out the top prize.

The Today Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon spoke to him about nabbing the prestigious gong and Hogg declared he was 'honoured'.

Asked about his unusual nickname, he explained: "I actually gave myself that nickname because there is absolutely no reason for me to be in a superhero's outfit. It is a terrible look."

During his appearance on the Channel 9 programme, Josh was joined by 'mullet royalty', including fellow winners Dean - who took out a prize for the second year in a row - and Max, who both won in two young categories, Jack, who 'did a backflip on the stage', and 'ranga' Chase who won the competition's first red-headed category.

"I don't even know where to start," host Stefanovic laughed. "You're like the royal family of Kurri Kurri. Now that's an Aussie family."

As for what makes an award-winning mullet, MulletFest founder Laura Johnson explained that it's about '70 per cent haircut' and the rest is judged on 'stage presence'.

"The mediocre mullet man really stole the show," she said, as Hogg added: "A couple midis of light helped."

Appearing on the breakfast television show ahead of the popular event, Johnson said that the MulletFest crew planned to hit the road in search of Australia's best mullet.

It was hoped the travelling competition would inject funds into local pubs that have been hit hard as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The original goals was to create a community, a culture and let people experience it," Johnson said.

"The only way you can do that is in person. We didn't want to go online. We didn't want to lose that festival spirit. That's why we're bringing Mulletfest out."

Johnson also demonstrated the lengths some entrants were willing to go to earn the coveted title of Mullet of the Day, showing one man's extreme mullet', dubbed the 'skullet'.

"Oh my goodness. That is hideous," Karl Stefanovic said.

"That's what gets the girls, Karl," Johnson said.

MulletFest sees people of all ages attend the event, with competition categories including vintage - for the over-50s - junior, ranga, grubby, extreme, international, rookie, and everyday mullets.
