Melbourne Cafe Is Charging Nearly $200 For A Cup Of Coffee

Melbourne has out-Melbourned itself.

Everyone knows Melbourne is the epicentre of coffee snobbery in Australia.

They have every blend, every style, everything from the coldest of cold drips to outrageously burning hot cuppas.

But you might be surprised to know there is a cafe in the Victorian capital that you'll have to save up for.

Gesha Cafe in Surrey Hills is charging a whopping $198 for one of its Yuzo-style premium coffees.

While you might think that this is a massive rip-off, the taste is well worth it according to those who have tried it.

Customer Bernard said he has about one cup of the expensive hot drinks per month, because who needs to save for a home or a future when you could have a cup of coffee described as 'smooth, aromatic and with fruit and butterscotch characteristics'.

Speaking to 7News, cafe owner Ken Taing said: "[It's] the most unique and beautiful coffee in the world."

The reason it's so expensive is because gesha coffee, also known as geisha, is difficult to grow and comes from remote locations - in this case the highlands of Panama.

The coffee originated from the village of Gesha, Ethiopia, before cultivation spread to Central America.

While geisha is grown elsewhere in other areas of the world including Colombia, Panama's beans are widely considered the best in the world.

Growing conditions there are very specific and these beans need the perfect altitude, volcanic soil and the microclimates of Boquete to be grown to perfection.

A geisha strain from the Lamastus family's Elida Estate in Panama sold at a record-breaking US$1,029 (£738) per pound in 2019.

You can see why Gesha Cafe has to charge so much for a cup of the luxury drink.

Sommelier Quinton Ferguson told 7News that the coffee is about the experience as much as the taste, and is comparable to what cognac is to wine.

So the next time you want to throw away your cash on an experience that will delight your senses then why not spend nearly two hundred dollarydoos on this cup of coffee. Hopefully it's not life changing and you need one every month like old mate Bernard.
