Melbourne Couple Who Threw Illegal Engagement Party Are 'Sorry' And Want 'Forgiveness'

They've copped death threats and vile abuse from people all over the country who were furious at their actions.

The Melbourne couple who have faced the scorn of the Premier and the whole state are 'sorry' for what they've done.

A husband and wife-to-be threw an engagement party despite the city being in lockdown due to an outbreak of the coronavirus.

Nearly 70 people attended the gathering and the groom even joked during a speech about how it was illegal that all the people were in the room.

But two attendees have already tested positive for Covid-19 and authorities are worried the party will become a super-spreader event.

The hashtag #engagementparty has been trending on social media ever since footage of the event was broadcast around Australia and the people involving in throwing the illegal soiree are sorry.

The mother of the groom told the Herald Sun: "We did wrong but the hate coming our way is just so mean...look into your heart and try to find forgiveness."

The couple has been sent death threats and a hospital worker has even been sacked for posting an anti-Semitic comment on Facebook about them.

Every person who attended the event will be fined $5,000 each, taking the total bill for the party to a whopping $350,000.

Premier Daniel Andrews didn't mince his words when speaking about the couple's disrespectful decision to host the party while millions of Melburnians were following the rules.

"What makes me really angry about it is that there are 69 people at that event and, no matter what you are told or what you read, the facts are these: There has been transmission at that event. There has been transmission at that event," he said.

"Above all, the thing that makes me angriest is that that event, that sort of conduct and some of the behaviour we've seen over the weekend is it takes away and it devalues the amazing work that millions and millions of Victorians are doing.

"These are s****y choices."

"The notion you can have a party and a gathering and not finish up in trouble, that is not a smart judgement.

"Our contact tracers who are working their guts out for all of us will have to spend literally thousands of hours dealing with hundreds and thousands of people connected to that engagement party."

He's since come out to say that the abuse directed at the couple needs to stop.

"The event that we spoke about at some length yesterday was not a function of being Jewish, it was a stupid function. It was an illegal function. Those people are being dealt with," he said.

"Them breaking the rules was not a reflection on the Jewish community, more broadly. It was not an act of faith or culture, it was not something that anyone should use to reflect upon a broader group of people in our Victorian community."

Victorian Police Commissioner Shane Patton said they will be throwing the book at every single person who attended the event, but he added that this wasn't the only party or gathering of concern.

Despite Melbourne being in lockdown for several weeks now, people still aren't getting the message to stay home and there were 22 new cases of the virus reported yesterday (August 16) and 24 new infections today (August 17).

"We have seen so many different breaches, it is ridiculous, it has to stop," Mr Patton said. "They are trying to get around the rules and guidelines. It is totally unacceptable and everybody knows they're doing the wrong thing."
