A Victorian man who was desperately trying to make ends meet after losing his job in lockdown has received some very good news.

The North Melbourne bloke was one of millions of Australians who bought a ticket for last night's (August 12) $80 million Powerball lottery.

When the balls were drawn, there was only one winner.

The 'excited but sleep-deprived man', who wanted to remain nameless, discovered he held the winning ticket late last night when he checked his numbers.

He was so excited that he couldn't sleep and has been thinking of how this incredible amount of money is going to change his life.

"I lost my job during one of the many lockdowns here in Melbourne," he said. "We had only just bought a home and didn't see it coming.

"I've been working as a cleaner ever since to make ends meet. Like for so many people, these lockdowns have been really tough for our family.

"But I've always said, you've just gotta keep trying. Now, look what's happened! It is absolutely unbelievable!"

He now has the title of Victoria's biggest individual lottery winner and Australia's third-biggest lottery winner.

The man said he can't wait to set his family up for the rest of their lives.

"I am certainly keen to pay off the mortgage and the other bills we have to begin with," he explained. "I am going to try and help everyone! There's so much we will be able to do with this prize. It will change so many people's lives!"

The winning numbers were 17, 10, 4, 26, 19, 23, 21 and the Powerball was number 7.

This is only the eighth time the Powerball jackpot has reached the $80 million mark in 25 years.

If you weren't the lucky bloke to take out the top prize, fear not, the Division Two prize pool of $1.42 million was shared by 13 winning tickets.

There were also 219 tickets that won a share of the $872,769 Division 3 prize pool. Those people will receive nearly $4,000 each.
