Residents from the Melbourne suburb of Diamond Creek have come up with an ingenious way of getting their local council to fix a pothole in the area.

The hole has damaged several cars and yet the council didn't act quick enough, according to locals.

So, they took it upon themselves to hilariously plant a tree in the unsightly hole that is smack-bang in the middle of the road.

On a Diamond Creek community Facebook page, members said the pothole was in the middle of the train line crossing at Diamond Creek.

Other group members claimed they had reported the pothole to various authorities.

Unfortunately, it wasn't an easy situation to rectify.

There has been a lot of finger pointing being done since a photo of the pothole tree went viral. It's bounced between the council, to Metro Trains and Victoria roads.

Many praised the residents for their cheeky idea after Channel 9 posted a photo to their Facebook page.

One man, who said he was a resident of Diamond Creek, elaborated further on the frustrating circumstances, saying: "This is in my local area - Local Council says its a VicRoads issue, VicRoads says its Metro Trains issue, Metro says its not..."

Another added in the comments: "Definitely genius. Cement in some kerbing and a park bench, just for good measure."

A third said: "Shame on the council, I think this is great."

The Department of Transport has been contacted for comment, though there's been no response at the time of writing
