Doctors have weighed in on the viral milk crate challenge that has been all over social media.

UK surgeon Dr Karan Rangarajan warned people against jumping on the trend because it can have some costly consequences.

"The milk crate challenge [...] poses a high risk of exposing yourself to orthopaedic injuries as well as injuries to the head and neck as a result of falling from heights onto the ground or the crates themselves which can puncture the skin," he said to Insider.

"Injuries can range from broken bones, ligament injuries and dislocations to potentially life-threatening ones such as spinal cord injuries or intracranial bleeds [which is] a bleed inside the skull."

Orthopedic surgeon Dr Shawn Anthony added that he's already seen loads of patients who have tried and failed to take on the challenge.

"Injuries can include broken wrists, shoulder dislocations, ACL and meniscus tears, as well as life-threatening conditions like spinal cord injuries," he told Today.

Essentially, people stack crates on top of each other in an ascending then descending order to create a miniature hill.

Participants have to see if they can climb up and down the pyramid without falling over.

Not only do they have to have incredible physical balance to complete the challenge, but they're usually also accompanied by a hooting crowd on all sides.

The videos that have taken over Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok usually end in the crates going everywhere as the participant falls from an uncomfortable height, crashing onto the floor below.

It always seems to be the way down that seems to be the most difficult part as the person tries to navigate the thin and wobbly gauntlet.

It clearly looks like a fairly painful experience and one man on Twitter has revealed what happened when he failed one attempt.

Renard Smith Sr. posted two images of his injured back as he holds an ice pack to cool the inflammation.

One person reacting to the painful pictures said: "Them ribs are done for. That ice ain't gonna do s**t but make you cold."

Another added: "Man what'd you think was going to happen smh."

A third wrote: "Imagine telling the doctor you fell off some crates. But seriously you should get this checked out."

While there are multiple videos of people successfully completing the challenge, there are many more showing people suffer savage falls from worrying heights.

Please don't try this at home.
