Pregnant Man Emoji Confirmed For Next Update On Smartphones

"One’s sex does not dictate the capacity to care for children in the home or work in the market."

Unicode has officially signed off on a set of 37 new emojis for smartphones and devices in the next update.

Emoji 14.0 is set to be rolled out later this year and will include a pregnant man and pregnant person in various skin tones.

The announcement of a pregnant man emoji back in July sparked one hell of a debate around whether it should be allowed.

In its proposal, Emojipedia explained how pregnancy or childbirth shouldn't be confined to one gender just because women have the ability to grow a child.

"One's sex does not dictate the capacity to care for children in the home or work in the market," it said in a report.

"In the same way sex equality law has aimed combat harmful sex stereotypes, there are a great deal of parallels regarding how one's sex does not dictate the capacity to cary children. This is not a new phenomenon.

"Pregnancy has been indiscriminate of gender throughout history but it is only now being formally recognized."

The emoji gatekeepers referenced the British Medical Association's advice for everyone to use the term 'pregnant person' instead of pregnant woman..

"Although 'a large majority of people who have been pregnant or have given birth identify as women', there are intersex men and transmen who get pregnant," Emojipedia said.

They also referenced Harvard law professor Jessica Clarke, who suggests 'law could see pregnancy not as something that only happens to women's bodies, but also as a bodily condition experienced by people who do not identify as women'.

The organisation explained that the emoji won't only be used to signify childbirth.

They're expecting people to use the pregnant man emoji 'to denote that uncomfortable feeling after you ate too much at lunch'. They're not wrong and it will definitely be used for that purpose.

In addition to the pregnant man, we'll be getting an 'I'm Melting' face, the 'This Is So Scary or Dramatic I Can't Look', the 'Omg You Didn't Just Say That' face, a saluting face, a more realistic crying eyes one and the 'Are You Sure You Want To Do That?' face.

Those aren't the official names for the emojis (which can be found here), but that's the fun translation of them.

There will also be a biting lip emoji for all those sexually suggestive times, a troll, loads of variations and skin tones of hands, spilt water, a finger pointing at the user, a nest with eggs in it and some other random inclusions.

According to Emojipedia, the rollout for 14.0 is scheduled for September this year, however the full rollout isn't expected until later in 2021 or early 2022.
