A sign outside an Australian church has gone viral for all the wrong reasons after people pointed out the the phrasing was a little too...much.

The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Gympie, Queensland thought it would be a great idea to have on its message board: "The best way to the top is on your knees."

The sign gets changed every week, but this message in particular was on display while the Gympie Show was going on next door over the weekend.

One person clearly unhappy with the way the word from God was arranged posted a photo online and it quickly became a laughing stock.

According to News Corp, there were more than 300 comments ranging from more sexual innuendos to people complaining about the person who complained.

One person who reckons everyone has their heads in the gutter wrote: "Certainly not offensive...clearly means praying...how can that be a bad thing?"

Another user hit back at the negativity and said: "I don't go to church but if I did, I'd go to this one because they have a sense of humour."

A third added: "Thing is, people should not jump to conclusions, and read the content in context with where it is written and by who, it clearly not a sexual reference or dirty remark, it was referring to pray to God to gain entry to heaven. I'm far from religious and that exactly how I interpret it."

These comments have circled back to Reverend Gary McClintock of the Wesleyan Methodist Church Gympie and he's upset at the discourse.

He's told the Courier Mail that 'of course the sign was never intended for any double meaning' and he finds it 'sad' that people would think there would ever be a sexual undertone to a religious message board.

"Kneeling in prayer has been a long term practice of worshippers around the world," he said.

"I am sorry if the sign has offended anyone. The purpose is not to offend; the purpose is to call people to prayer and to consider Christ."

The sign has since been changed to: "If life gives you more than you can stand, get on your knees."

Not sure they want to keep with the kneeling idea right now but, hey, that's society for you.
