A schoolgirl has admitted to lying about a story that set off a chain reaction and saw her teacher beheaded by an Islamic terrorist in France.
Middle school teacher Samuel Paty was killed in October last year in Paris after he showed his students a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad that was displayed in the Charlie Hebdo magazine.
It was part of a moral and civic education course on freedom of expression that was a part of the French curriculum.
The schoolgirl, who is only known as Z, alleged Muslim students were told to leave the classroom ahead of the lesson. Mr Paty actually just told them to close their eyes if they didn't want to see it.
Displaying depictions of the Prophet Muhammad is severely taboo in Islamic culture and is strictly forbidden.
But French newspaper Le Parisien has revealed Z admitted to not even being in school that day because she was suspended for a different matter.
Her lawyer told AFP News Agency: "She lied because she felt trapped in a spiral because her classmates had asked her to be a spokesperson."
The student told her father she had been suspended for challenging Mr Paty on the lesson, when in actuality she was sent home because of repeated absence from school.
Z's father launched a campaign on social media to have Paty punished for offending the Islamic community.
The father identified the 47-year-old teacher by name as well as the school he worked at in two videos on Facebook, which managed to get widespread attention.
According to Sky News, prosecutors have alleged there was a 'direct casual link' between the social media campaign and 18-year-old Abdullah Anzorov deciding to behead the teacher for retribution.
Paty's family lawyer is disappointed by the revelation and alleged the girl's family knew about why she wasn't in school that day.
Virginie Le Roy told RTL radio: "So to come and say now, sorry, I believed my daughter's lies, that's really weak."
Paty's murder came a week and a half after his controversial lesson, with the teenage terrorist waiting outside the school gates and asking teachers where he was.
He paid two students to identify Paty and had to wait two hours until the teacher left the school campus.
Anzorov used a 30cm knife to stab and behead Paty near the school.
The terrorist uploaded a picture to Twitter of Paty's severed head alongside a message saying: "In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful, ... to Macron, leader of the infidels, I executed one of your hellhounds who dared to belittle Muhammad, calm his fellow human beings before a harsh punishment is inflicted on you."
Police found him a short time later and shot him nine times.
