The Pentagon has confirmed America's longest war is over.

A plane carrying the final remaining US troops has left Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport bound for the US, which brings the curtain down on the 20-year war.

General Frank McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, confirmed the military aircraft safely left Afghanistan just before President Joe Biden's deadline.

He admits it was difficult leaving before being able to secure everyone they wanted to evacuate.

"There's a lot of heartbreak associated with this departure. We did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out," he said. "But I think if we'd stayed another 10 days, we wouldn't have gotten everybody out."

He estimate there are American citizens 'in the low hundreds' still in the country, however he has faith they will soon be able to leave.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said now that they're gone the airport in Kabul is without air traffic control services.

The planned removal of America's presence in Afghanistan came to a tricky end with the uprising of the Taliban.

The militant group took over the country as America was gearing up to finally leave after two decades and they managed to easily overwhelm local forces.

It caused thousands of people to rush to Kabul's airport and beg for a spot on an evacuation plane.

It's also led billions of dollars' worth of American military equipment and technology to end up in the hands of the Taliban, the group America spent the last two decades fighting.

This result has tarnished what was built over 20 years and many have questioned whether America and other international forces should have stayed longer.

Joe Biden has rejected this idea, adding that it wouldn't have mattered if they remained in Afghanistan for another two decades as local troops need to be prepared to defend themselves.

He's been happy to end America's 'forever war' and insisted that he didn't want to continue sending his country's servicemen and women into the Middle East without a justified reason.

More than 2,400 Americans have died during the 20-year war and those tragedies extended all the way until last week.

Twin suicide bomb attacks happened near the airport killing nearly 179 Afghan locals and 13 US troops.

The road ahead for Afghanistan is murky and everyone is waiting for the dust to settle to see what this Taliban 2.0 will look like considering they've promised to modernise.
