Punters Beware: There’s A Right And Wrong Way To Bet During State Of Origin

Don't be *that* punter during the series.

State of Origin is back to its rightful winter home and we're all excited to watch some champagne rugby league moments over the series.

As with any and all sport, there can be a hell of a lot of money spent during the Queensland vs New South Wales battles in the form of betting.

You can seemingly gamble on anything and everything to do with the games, from the first try scorer, to the half-time score to whether there will be a streaker.

But while a few bucks here and there might be a manageable sum, some people can lose a lot.

So, before you hand over your cold hard cash to the TAB or smartphone betting app, it's important to know there's a right way and a wrong way of betting and it's called betiquette: a mix of good old-fashioned etiquette with betting. It's the behaviour you take to stay in control of your betting.

Limits

Right way: Setting a limit of what you want to spend and sticking to it. Take only what you want to spend or set a limit on your betting app.

Wrong way: Not keeping track of how much you're putting down and dishing out your cash like it's going out of fashion.

While this might be easier said than done, having a clear amount you're willing to lose is vital to not going overboard with your losses.

Source of Cash

Right way: Using your money and your money only.

Wrong way: Asking your mates, your neighbour, your mailman etc. for a bit of extra dosh when your chips are down and promising to pay them back when you're up.

This will only put you into debt with others and it can be extremely awkward if you can't front up with the cash to pay them back.

Influences

Right way: Enjoying what your pals are doing but sticking to your own game plan.

Wrong way: Being intimidated by your mates bet and changing or upping your bet.

Just because they've dumped a load of money on the fullback scoring a try after running 80 metres in the last 10 minutes doesn't mean you have to do the same or one-up them. There are no prizes for those who act big then lose big.

Also, it can be pretty easy to get caught up with all the madness when you're betting, so try not to get distracted by promotions on apps and social media that only want you to bet more.

Know When to Call It Quits

Right way: Accepting you've reached your cash limit for the day and just appreciating the game without betting on it.

Wrong way: Trying to win back your losses by betting on other aspects of the game or even games that are running elsewhere.

We're not trying to take the fun out of watching the State of Origin; we just want to help you avoid being *that* punter.
