The Big Bird Bandits are still on the run but hope they haven't been too much of a 'birden'.

The anonymous Big Bird Bandits have handed their expensive gift over to South Australian authorities.

The state's police appealed for information about the bizarre disappearance that happened over the weekend.

"Sometime between 4.30pm Sunday 18 and 9.30am Monday 19 April a large yellow 'Big Bird' costume was stolen from the Circus area. Feathers were spotted nearby on Port Road," SAPOL said.

"If you know the whereabouts of the costume please call the police assistance line immediately on 131 444."

Thankfully the search is over and Big Bird is safe, but the hunt is still on for the bandits.

It's understandable considering the Sesame Street character costs a whopping $160,000, which is one pricey chook.

SAPOL released a new press release explaining how they were so close to nabbing the thieves.

"Just before 5am, police patrols were called to Port Road after two males wearing dark clothing were seen carrying what appeared to be the stolen costume," the state police said.

"The costume was dumped near the south/western end of the circus by an electricity box, with the two males then running off back across Port Road.

"Police patrols converged on the area, securing the stolen costume which contained a letter of apology in the beak. Patrols searched the area including using a police dog patrol but the two men weren't located.

"The costumer appears to be intact and has been returned to the circus. The suspects if apprehended could face one count of theft... two counts of theft..."

While the costume was dumped on the side of the road, the bandits left a rather strange note behind.

They wrote: "We had no idea what we were doing, or what our actions would cause. We were just having a rough time and were trying to cheer ourselves up.

The bandits hoped they didn't cause too much of a 'birden' but said they 'had a great time with Mr Bird, he's a great guy and no harm came to our friend'.
