A two-year-old child has died and his infant brother has been rushed to hospital after a circumcision procedure in Western Australia appeared to go horribly wrong.

7News and The West Australian have revealed the toddler and baby had to be taken to a Perth Children's Hospital on Tuesday (December 7) night.

It's unclear exactly what happened during the routine procedure that caused the two boys' conditions to deteriorate so rapidly.

When the family arrived at at the hospital in Armadale, the two-year-old boy was pronounced as dead.

The homicide squad was initially called in to investigate what happened, however as the facts became clearer they handed the case over to the coronial investigation unit.

A spokesperson for Western Australia Police said the death isn't being treated as suspicious.

They added: "It can be confirmed the boy underwent a medical procedure at a registered medical centre prior to his death."

A report is being prepared for the coroner, who will investigate exactly what went down during the procedure.

The toddler's infant brother, who local media have quoted as being either seven or eight months old, required 'life-saving surgery' to correct whatever happened during the circumcision.

He was treated in the hospital's intensive care unit and is reportedly in a stable condition and recovering.
