UK Prime Minister Warns Pubs Might Force Drinkers To Prove They've Been Vaccinated

Brits are feverishly counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until they're allowed into the pub again.

The UK has been under a fairly strict and lengthy lockdown after a massive wave of coronavirus infections and deaths, however they've been given a date of when life can seemingly return to normal.

But, if you're wanting to celebrate with a pint, you better be vaccinated.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson flagged that landlords or pub owners could force drinkers to prove they've received the Covid-19 jab before they enter.

The PM said during the Commons Liaison Committee: "I do think that the basic concept of vaccine certification should not be totally alien to us."

When asked whether that could apply to restaurants and pubs, he replied with: "I think that that's the kind of thing - it may be up to individual publicans, it may be up to the landlord."

Beer gardens and outdoor restaurant spaces are expected to reopen from April 12, however it won't be until mid-May when indoor pubs and eateries will be permitted to throw open their doors. June 22 is when they will hopefully be able to operate without any type of restrictions.

Vaccine passports have been flagged for months as a way of ensuring everyone in a particular area has been vaccinated. However, there has also been strong opposition to the idea of 'no jab, no play'.

The British Pub Confederation's Greg Mulholland was disturbed by the idea of it being up to individual pub owners or landlords to be in charge of policing vaccine passports.

He said: "We were very happy pubs were doing their bit to help with test and trace.

"But for the government to abdicate responsibility and ask pubs to make a moral judgement - it's just not acceptable.

"Pubs can't open with any sort of normality until June. So on top of having to take on extra staff to serve people at tables, the idea pubs can take on staff to act as door staff for vaccine passports is absurd."

Mr Johnson said his government is also still trying to work out the blueprint for larger vaccine passport measures like for travel and large events like sporting matches.

The Prime Minister admits there are many issues to iron out.

"This is an area where we're looking at a novelty for our country," said during questioning.

"We haven't had stuff like this before, we've never thought in terms of having something that you have to show to go to a pub or theatre.

"So there are deep and complex issues that we need to explore, ethical issues about what the role is for government in mandating people to have such a thing or, indeed, banning people from doing such a thing.

"There are complex issues we need to work out."

"We can't be discriminatory against people who, for whatever reason, can't have the vaccine - there might be medical reasons why people can't have the vaccine, or some people may genuinely refuse to have one.

"Now I think that's a mistake, I think everybody should have a vaccine but we need to thrash all this out."
