The United States has issued its first ever passport with an X gender designation.

The newly minuted travel and identity document will finally give the US citizen who doesn't consider themselves male or female a way to express themselves in a legally and officially recognised way.

The US State Department expects to be able to roll out the passport to all gender non-conforming people next year but it's been confirmed at least one citizen now has one.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said: "I want to reiterate, on the occasion of this passport issuance, the Department of State's commitment to promoting the freedom, dignity, and equality of all people - including LGBTQI+ persons.

"We look forward to offering this option to all routine passport applicants once we complete the required system and form updates in early 2022.

"The Department also continues to work closely with other U.S. government agencies to ensure as smooth a travel experience as possible for all passport holders, regardless of their gender identity."

The department declined to confirm who the citizen is however some outlets have suggested it could be Dana Zzyym, who is an intersex citizen from Colorado and has been battling the government for six years to get their passport to reflect their gender identity.

Zzyym went public with their story after being denied for a passport because they wrote intersex above the boxes for male and female in the application.

They request the opportunity to put X in the gender section and has been fighting for that right ever since 2015.

Dana said it was a massive step forward when the State Department announce back in June that they would be broadening the scope for gender designations on passports.

They said: "I've been at this fight for so long. I am optimistic that... I will soon receive an accurate passport.

"One that reflects who I truly am; and that will allow for me to present in person at the several international conferences to which I've been invited to present on issues confronting intersex people."

US President Joe Biden made a promise that he would make sure America would help every citizen feel like they were equal to one another.

During the election campaign, the Democratic hopeful told the country that 'every transgender or non-binary person should have the option of changing their gender marker to M, F, or X on government identifications, passports, and other documentation'.

That's now a reality.
