Victoria has set a new record for the largest jump in new coronavirus cases over a 24 hour period.

Premier Daniel Andrews has revealed there have been 725 tests come back positive since yesterday as well as 15 deaths.

The previous record was 723 cases.

Yesterday (Tuesday, August 4), Victoria recorded 439 new cases of Covid-19 and 11 more deaths - all of which were connected to aged care.

It comes as Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison lashed out at people who are flouting coronavirus laws like wearing a face mask.

He was particularly upset at reports of a police officer having her head bashed against the concrete after telling a woman in Melbourne put on a face covering.

"Get real. This is a difficult time for everybody, I know people are angry and frustrated," Mr Morrison told Seven's Sunrise program.

"It is not unreasonable to wear a mask, not unreasonable to do the most basic things around distancing."

It's been mandatory for people in Melbourne Metro and Mitchell Shire areas to have a face covering for several weeks. There has been a rise of people openly challenging the rule for a variety of reasons.

More to come.
