A Sydney hospital has launched an urgent investigation after a woman was accused of working there despite not being qualified.

The 27-year-old allegedly scored a job at Bankstown Hospital in January and treated patients for eight months before being found out.

She is accused of failing her final university exams and then forging documents to say she had passed in order to get accepted into the hospital.

The woman was always supervised while treating patients, as is the norm for graduates, however the revelation has sent shockwaves through the community.

A Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital spokesperson said in a statement: "Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital discovered on Monday an employee was not registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA).

"This person was immediately removed from their duties and Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital referred the matter to NSW Police for investigation.

"This person worked at the hospital from January to August 2021 and was fully supervised throughout that time.

"The hospital is also conducting an internal investigation, and has reported the matter to AHPRA."

NSW Health has referred the matter to Bankstown Police and they are also investigating the allegations.

She could face criminal charges, including fraud, as a result of the claims.

7News claims the 27-year-old lost her job when the hospital asked her to provide documentation of her studies and she couldn't.

A local told the news network: "You have to be concerned about it but I wouldn't expect this in our area, I think the doctors here are very good."

Another added: "You can't be treated by someone who's not qualified to work, you're putting yourself at danger."
