Construction Manager Says Its Difficult Being Pretty In A Male Dominated Industry

A woman has opened up about how pretty privilege can work against you depending on the context.

Autumn Westfall is a project manager in commercial construction in Michigan and says some people don't take her seriously because of her good looks.

She uploaded a video to her TikTok account where she goes into how she has been constantly undermined because she's female and pretty.

"It's 100 per cent true that pretty privilege does exist and yes it is absolutely rude how when people find you attractive they are generally just nice to you for that reason and that reason only," she said.

"Until you, as a woman in a power position steps into a male dominated industry, then you might as well be carrying around a tray with coffee and snacks.

"I swear the logic is if you are pretty you have nice hair you have your makeup done you have a nice outfit you possibly could not be in a power position or have any intelligence whatsoever.

"So, for me personally, I work in construction management on multimillion dollar jobs and I can't tell you how fun it is to have my emails ignored and people literally talk to my male co-worker and just act like I am there to serve them.

"So yes, while pretty privilege is a thing, it can be switched in the opposite direction."

Autumn revealed in another TikTok video that she doesn't just get discriminated against by her male colleagues and clients.

The mother of two and part-time model revealed she was criticised by another woman for wearing 'inappropriate' worksite clothing despite donning jeans, boots and a normal looking top underneath her high-vis vest every day.

She explained how he has also been accused of sleeping her way up her company because, she says, there's no way someone that pretty can be in a high-level position in the construction industry.

"Been there, always a fun one to hear going around," she said in a reply to someone in the comments section.

Autumn says reverse pretty privilege is just misogyny dressed up with a nicer sounding name.

She's calling on men and women to do better not just in the construction industry but in all workplaces where a woman might be in a powerful position.

She wants people to be judged based on their abilities and not how they look or what they're dressed as at work.
