Going on national TV is always going to be a slightly stressful experience, but it just got the better of an American Idol contestant who fell flat on her face following her performance.

Judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were treated to a performance of the Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion classic 'Tell Him' by Funke Lagoke and Ronda Felton.

Luke said he was starting to like Funke's voice, while Lionel told the duo they 'crashed and burned'.

However, before Lionel got round to telling them whether they were going through or not, Funke, a former Miss Nigeria USA, collapsed to the floor.

Lionel and Luke raced over the the stage to see whether the 28-year-old was OK, while the 'Teenage Dream' singer looked on in utter disbelief.

Medics quickly made it over to the fallen contestant and noted that she had 'busted her chin', and a trolley was brought out to take Funke off for treatment.

The show then informed viewers that Funke 'was treated for dehydration and released from the hospital'.

Her partner Ronda, 19, was left in floods of tears following the incident, with judges consoling her after witnessing such a 'traumatic' episode.

But it wasn't all bad news for the pair, despite what they had just been through.

Lionel went on to confirm to Ronda that she and Funke had made it through to the showstopper round after all. Which was nice of him.

Speaking after, Ronda said she was over the moon with the news.

She said: "It's absolutely amazing news. I can't say that I'm happy in this moment, I'm worried about her health more than anything.

"That's the number one important thing right now. I just want her to know that I love her, I care about her, and I just want her to be OK."

But this isn't the first time a wannabe popstar has had a bit of a mishap on one of these shows.

A couple of years back, X Factor contestant Tommy Ludford managed to fall off the stage midway through his performance.

Ludford, who was just 20 at the time, was all set to finish his song when he takes a quick step back, only to stand directly in the gap of the X-shaped stage and plummet to the floor.

Dermot O'Leary was on hand to race over to the stricken singer and offer him a helping hand. Fortunately, Tommy was alright and emerged from the incident with nothing more than a bruise to his pride.
