Andrea Bocelli has shone a light on the world amid the doom and gloom caused by the coronavirus.

The opera singer broadcast an Easter Sunday concert live on YouTube from Italy to help lift people's spirits during this difficult time.

He performed some incredible songs (more on that later), but none were as amazing and spine-tingling as 'Amazing Grace'.

Bocelli placed himself outside the doors to the iconic Duomo di Milano, the cathedral of Milan, and belted out the song that everyone knows and loves.

Of course, there was no raging crowd present, so no roaring applause at the end nor teary eyes in sight.

The 61-year-old played to no-one, except for an audience watching online.

As he sang, shots of European cities seemingly empty because of the coronavirus played on the screen, creating a memorable and moving montage.

The comments on the YouTube live-stream certainly suggested people had appreciated the performance, with one person writing: "Sitting on my little couch in Chicago, Illinois, during a shelter-in-place, listening to this from halfway around the globe and feeling freer than ever."

Another added: "Against the imposing architecture of the cathedral, the simple lone figure of Andrea Bocelli singing heartfelt arias and songs was most moving, in the midst of so much loss and grief, both in Italy and throughout the world.

"'Amazing Grace' was especially resonant, an expression of awakening to a more encompassing truth, fellowship with all humanity."

A third said: "I cannot tell you how moved we were by your offering. The tears streamed, the heart opened. We followed you through the stations of the cross, the entire range of human emotion."

Bocelli performed four other songs inside the cathedral: 'Panis Angelicus', 'Ave Maria', 'Sancta Maria' and 'Domine Deus'.

The opera singer wrote a message on YouTube before the performance got underway, hoping the free concert would help people who might be in hospital, self-isolating at home or needing a bit of hope.

"On the day in which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I'm honoured and happy to answer 'Sì' to the invitation of the City and the Duomo of Milan," Bocelli said.

"I believe in the strength of praying together; I believe in the Christian Easter, a universal symbol of rebirth that everyone - whether they are believers or not - truly needs right now.

"Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we will hug this wounded Earth's pulsing heart, this wonderful international forge that is reason for Italian pride."

Italy, particular the country's north, has been hit hard by the coronavirus. There have been more than 156,000 cases in the country, the third highest in the world.

The Lombardy region, where Milan is situated, has the highest number of cases in Italy, with more than 57,000.
