Demi Lovato is celebrating being completely sober for six months. That might not seem like that long, but it represents a meaningful and impressive turnaround for the singer, who was rushed to hospital back in July following an apparent drug overdose.

Lovato shared an Instagram story with her legions of fans to share a picture of a chip that represents her half-year milestone, as well as a slice of cake that honours her progress.

In front of the cake is a card that reads "Happy 6 mo. We are so f***ing proud of you! Love, Team DL."

Excellent news, well done.

Lovato has been pretty open over the years about her struggles with addiction. As mentioned before, Lovato was hospitalised last July, then entered a rehabilitation clinic in August before returning to her home in Los Angeles after three straight months of treatment there.

Back in July, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call to the singer's Hollywood home and found her unconscious. She was treated at the scene with Naloxone - an anti-overdose drug - before being rushed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital for further treatment.

Following that incident, a spokesperson for her family told NBC News: "Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support. Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy."

Since that incident her wishes have been broadly respected. She has been keeping a pretty low profile, only occasionally taking to social media to offer her fans and supporters a quick update.

She also shared some more intimate thoughts about the events in July. Whilst she deleted the original post, it remains on her mother's Instagram.

Lovato's post read: "I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,

"What I've learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet."

Before that last incident, Lovato had been completely sober for around six years. However, a song released in June gave an insight into the troubles of her personal life.

The song, entitled 'Sober', contained the lyrics: "Mama, I'm so sorry I'm not sober anymore/And daddy please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor,

"To the ones who never left me/We've been down this road before/I'm so sorry, I'm not sober anymore."

Let's hope that she can continue her recovery and get back to doing what she loves.
