The outspoken pop star Lily Allen has opened up about her alcohol dependency problem, admitting she used to neck a bottle of vodka daily during the height of her drinking days.

In a frank interview with GQ magazine, the 'Smile' singer admitted to once having drug and alcohol problems, and spoke about the time she realised that she had "an alcohol dependency".

Reflecting on her Sheezus tour in 2014, Lily revealed she used to drink large glasses of vodka with just a drop of soda water in the mix, getting to the point where she could no longer tell the difference between her strong drink and her backing musician's glass of water.

She said: "I never really had been a drinker before. I always had been a drug taker, and the drinking was an accessory to doing drugs. I realised, 'Oh, fuck, I haven't taken any drugs for ages, but I'm drinking a lot.'

"I was drinking a bottle of Grey Goose a day. It was really bad."

One of the reasons, Lily added, was that she had wanted to lose weight after giving birth to her youngest child, Marnie, while another was to help deal with the stress of her break up with ex-husband Sam Cooper.

"I was down to 8st from 14. I was trying to meet the beauty standards and wasn't eating and I felt very insecure about the way I looked.

"I lost my house and my kids started to feel distant and I broke up with my husband and started to realise [drinking like I was] probably wasn't working."

Instead of letting her life spiral out of control further, Lily put herself into treatment by committing herself to six months of sobriety and attending 90 dependency meetings in 90 days.

Fortunately, today the singer is able to reflect on the darker times in knowledge that she's back in control of her drinking.

"I fell off that wagon, but [it made me discover] that I've always been a big self-medicator," she said.

"Now knowing that, if I'm not feeling 100 percent, I just stay away from drugs and alcohol, basically."
