X Factor main man and label boss Simon Cowell has announced plans to record a charity single to help the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire that left many dead, injured and without homes earlier in the week.

The Syco label boss says he has already enlisted plenty of stars who were eager to get involved with the cause.

The single is expected to be recorded over the course of the weekend. Cowell added that stars who aren't in the area to record can lay down their parts wherever they happen to be in the world.

He said on today's Good Morning Britain: "We will record it hopefully and finish it Sunday, latest Monday. We already started to get a lot of people calling in saying, 'Of course we would love to do it.'"

"People who can't make it physically to the studio, we can record their vocals wherever they are in the world.

"It has to have the right message, and most importantly, for me, it has to mean something to the people affected by what happened. I do genuinely believe this will make a difference."

Posting about the charity single on Twitter, Cowell stated: "We hope to confirm a record tomorrow which will raise some money for the many people affected by this tragedy. Making calls tonight."

Among the artists Cowell manages are big names in pop music such as Little Mix, James Arthur, One Direction, Olly Murs and Fifth Harmony. While it's not yet known who exactly will feature on the charity record, singers such as Rita Ora, Lily Allen and Adele have reportedly expressed an interest.

This isn't Cowell's first charity single; in 2010 the label boss produced a cover of R.E.M.'s 'Everybody Hurts' to raise funds for those affected by the Haiti earthquake. The single featured many stars, including Rod Stewart and Mariah Carey.

Singer Rita Ora has also offered her time to help those who lost their homes and possessions in the fire.

"This is my neighbourhood, I can't believe this is happening," she wrote on Instagram. "My prayers are with everybody involved my heart is beating so fast. I used to play in that block - I want to do all I can do to help."

On Twitter she added: "Shocked and devastated to hear this terrible news. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy in west London."

The final count of those who lost their lives in the fire is still a long way off being published, according to officials, and structural damage means that firefighters are currently unable to access the outer edges of the tower block.
