Red Hot Chili Peppers were due to perform yesterday at the annual KROQ Weenie Roast in Irvine, California.

However, the band have had to cancel the show as frontman Anthony Kiedis has been rushed to hospital.

The 53-year-old singer was at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre when he began experiencing "extreme stomach pain," a KROQ rep told Billboard (via Rolling Stone).

Kiedis has since been transported from the venue to a nearby hospital.

Obviously the circumstances have meant the band have had to cancel their appearance.

"No one's more disappointed than us that we couldn't perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony," drummer Chad Smith tweeted Saturday night after the cancellation had been made public.

After Kiedis was taken to the hospital, the other members of the band- Smith, Flea and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer took to the stage at the event to explain to the fans in the crowd what was happening, and the circumstances that had caused the cancellation.

"We live to rock, we live to fucking dig deep into the depths of our hearts and rock, but unfortunately there's a medical thing that happened and we needed to deal with it, so we're unable tonight," Flea told the crowd. "We will play for you very soon, we will play for you like the feral animals that we are, and we're so sorry."

Other bands playing the event included Panic! at the Disco and Empire of the Sun, Blink-182 also played a surprise set.

As for RHCP, thy're next scheduled to play on May 17th at Burbank, California's iHeartRadio Theater. As of yet, they are still to comment on whether this show will go ahead.
