Tributes have been paid to Mac Miller, a platinum selling hip-hop artist who died last night aged 26.

Police and ambulance workers found Miller - whose real name is Malcolm McCormick - in an unresponsive state at his Los Angeles home on Friday morning and he was declared dead just before midday.

The cause of his death will be determined by the coroners, but it had been known that Miller had struggled with addiction problems, a subject that he addressed extensively in his music.

A statement released by his family read: "Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26,

"He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time."

Stars from around the world of music have paid public tribute to the musician, who recently released his fifth album, entitled Swimming.

Snoop Dogg, fellow rapper and Miller's co-star in Scary Movie 5, said: "So sad u gone home young Mac I had to post this to smile and think about the good Time we had on the set of this movie man god bless ya family. Pittsburg we lost a real one today"

Missy Elliott said: "I'm so saddened to hear about @MacMiller such a kind spirit Sending prayers for strength for his family & friends & fans during this difficult time"

Former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher simply said: "Mac miller RIP x"

J. Cole used his tribute to touch upon the subject of substance abuse and mental health. He said: "This is a message for anybody in this game that's going through something. If you don't feel right, if you feel you have a substance problem, if you need a ear to vent to. If you uncomfortable talking to people around you. Please reach out to me."

Miller had also drawn headlines for his two-year relationship with Ariana Grande. The pair dated for two years and performed together at the 'One Love Manchester' concert, organised after a terrorist attack following one of Grande's concerts.

Their relationship ended in May 2018, with Miller's ongoing battles with substance misuse thought to have been amongst the reasons for their split.

At the time, Grande tweeted: "I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be.

"I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety & prayed for his balance for years (and always will of course) but shaming/blaming women for a man's inability to keep his s*** together is a very major problem."

Grande has not yet commented on Miller's death.
