At least 19 people are dead and 45 injured after a knifeman went on the rampage at a centre for disabled people in Japan, the Mirror has reported.

Four of those injured are thought to be in a serious condition.

The attack took place in the Japanese city of Sagamihara, west of Tokyo, with locals spotting the assailant holding a weapon in the grounds of the Tsukui Yamayuri Garden.

The building is reported to include facilities for disabled people.

Police say they have arrested a 26-year-old man, who was formerly a member of staff at the facility, after he turned himself in.

Emergency services arrived on the scene just after 2.30am local time, following a call made by staff at the centre. Armed police encircled the grounds and arrested the 26-year-old on suspicion of murder.

A motive is yet to be established for the attack.
