Former actor Shelley Malil was granted parole on Tuesday, a decade after being imprisoned for the attempted murder of his girlfriend.

The San Diego Tribune reported that Malil, known for his role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, is expected to be released in two weeks and will remain on supervised parole for five years.

Malil appeared before a panel at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in California where commissioners unanimously agreed to grant him the parole he was first offered in January.

The 53-year-old was sentenced to 12 years to life in prison in 2010 and was convicted of premeditated attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

In 2008 he was found to have stabbed Kendra Beebe, his then-girlfriend, 23 times at her home in San Marcos after reportedly flying into a jealous rage.

The violent attack continued as Malil slashed Beebe with a broken wine glass and a kitchen knife while her children slept upstairs. He also tried to smother her with a pillow.

During a parole panel hearing in January, Malil admitted he attacked Beebe with a hope to 'annihilate' her, according to Fox News.

He also suggested his actions were partly fuelled by alcoholism and jealousy but insisted that he's since changed.

Malil has undertaken self-help courses, earned a correspondence college degree, and is attending Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Parole Panel had evaluated the actor as being a low risk of committing future violence and granted his release back in January.

However Gov. Jerry Brown blocked his parole and questioned Mail's rehabilitation, asking why his "rage escalated so far out of control, and resulted in such a prolonged horror."

Beebe has proclaimed that she's 'still living in fear' after the attack while speaking at the hearing and said: "I have relived this night hundreds of times."

Speaking to the San Diego Tribune she also expressed that she was 'shocked' at the panel's decision to grant her attacker parole.

"Today, these men had a chance to take real action showing that we, as a society, value women and will protect them," she said.

"For this, I am sad. Because of their inaction, I will continue to live in fear."

On Tuesday, however, Malil said that he was dedicated to his rehabilitation: "I never want to create another victim again."

Since his career began in the mid-90's, Malil had enjoyed minor roles in a number of high profile TV shows and movies including ER, Seinfeld, Scrubs and Holes.
