A millionaire has started giving away large sums of money to strangers through the power of social media, having recently set up a new campaign he calls 'Twitter Philanthropy'.

Bill Pulte, 31, is the CEO of private equity firm Pulte Capital, and also the grandson of billionaire William Pulte, who founded home construction company PulteGroup in 1956.

Through his Twitter Philanthropy project, Pulte gives to people who 'need necessities' like food and rent, using the social media platform to 'micro-target' those who might benefit from his cash.

He's also managed to build a huge social media following in the process, referring to his 637,000+ followers as 'teammates'.

Yesterday Pulte tweeted a list of 'accomplishments' that had been ticked off that week, which included everything from buying a birthday cake for a kid whose family couldn't afford one and groceries for a 'struggling family' through to gifting a new car to an 'amputee veteran' and donating $4,000 to help a single mother 'out of an abusive relationship'.

Back in July, Pulte also announced that we would donate $30,000 to a military veteran if US President Donald Trump retweeted him - which he did on 10 July.

Speaking to Detroit Free Press, Pulte said he was inspired to launch Twitter Philanthropy during a summer holiday with his family.

He said: "There is such hate and vitriol on social media these days, and I wondered how come we're not using all of this technology for good.

"Because of the success I've had in business, coupled with my younger age, I felt that it was appropriate for me to try to champion social media for good.

"My experience has been that people are willing to give a hand and help their fellow Americans as long as they know that (the money) is going to be put to good use. And technology allows us to do that instantaneously."

Pulte now has more than 10 staff members, who are devoted to rifling through the barrage of requests that come his way.

In an interview with The Detroit News, the philanthropist added: "Technology allows us to micro-target to people who are immediately in need.

"They can't afford to pay for food or gas or electricity.

"Social networks have so much nonsense on them, it's about time we started spreading positivity and love."

Pulte has also promised to give away $1 million of his own cash by the end of this year if he reaches one million Twitter followers.
