Family and friends of those killed in the shocking attack were packed into the courtroom and gasped when the not guilty plea was read out.

The Australian-born man was remanded in custody and will appear next in August.

After two mental health assessments were ordered to determine whether the 28-year-old was fit to plea and stand trial, Justice Cameron Mander told the court: "No issues arise regarding the defendant's fitness to plead, to instruct council and to stand trial. Therefore a fitness hearing is not required."

More to come.
