Gunman Opens Fire At Californian High School Leaving Multiple People Injured

Multiple people have been injured in a school shooting in South California.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed on Twitter that officers are responding to an incident at Saugus High School in the city of Santa Clarita - about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

It's understood that 'approximately five people' were hurt during the incident - which happened shortly before 8am local time - with one victim reportedly in a critical condition.

A spokesperson for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department wrote: "We're monitoring the developing situation at Saugus High School with reports of a shooting & multiple people injured. We're in communications with our law enforcement partners, including @LASDHQ & @LASchoolPolice, although at this time there's no nexus to the City of Los Angeles."

According to reports, the male shooter, who was wearing black, is still at large. It is not yet clear whether the injuries sustained by those at the school were from gunshots or not.

It has also been reported that Sheriff Alex Villanueva told local media that the suspect was a student at the school.

Police have said they believe there only to be one gunman but "are actively investigating and following all leads".

Since the news broke, the country's media has descended on the school, with live helicopter footage being streamed from showing students walking in single file behind armed officers as authorities search the area for the assailant.
