Multiple people have been injured in a school shooting in South California.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed on Twitter that officers are responding to an incident at Saugus High School in the city of Santa Clarita - about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.
It's understood that 'approximately five people' were hurt during the incident - which happened shortly before 8am local time - with one victim reportedly in a critical condition.
A spokesperson for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department wrote: "We're monitoring the developing situation at Saugus High School with reports of a shooting & multiple people injured. We're in communications with our law enforcement partners, including @LASDHQ & @LASchoolPolice, although at this time there's no nexus to the City of Los Angeles."
According to reports, the male shooter, who was wearing black, is still at large. It is not yet clear whether the injuries sustained by those at the school were from gunshots or not.
It has also been reported that Sheriff Alex Villanueva told local media that the suspect was a student at the school.
Police have said they believe there only to be one gunman but "are actively investigating and following all leads".
Since the news broke, the country's media has descended on the school, with live helicopter footage being streamed from showing students walking in single file behind armed officers as authorities search the area for the assailant.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Office are currently updating residents on the situation and have put all surrounding schools on lock down.
The force tweeted: "This is an active shooter situation. The suspect described to be a male Asian, black clothing is outstanding.
"AS A PRECAUTION, ALL SCHOOLS IN WILLIAM S HART DISTRICT ARE BEING PUT ON LOCKDOWN.
"Central Park on Bouquet Canyon is being used as reunification point for parents. If you live in neighborhood s anywhere near Saugus High, PLEASE LOCK DOORS and stay inside. If you see suspect, male dark clothing, in backyards, etc. CALL 911."
Sheriff Tim Murakami tweeted: "Shooter at Saugus HS. Several injured. LASD resources on site and searching for suspect. Will be locking down area schools. Advise residents to shelter in place and report any suspicious activity."
According to NBCLA, local police have told reporters that a "weapon was recovered" but that it was "unclear if shooter had any other weapons".
